When Mason Mount was subbed off in the 20th minute of the preseason friendly between Manchester United and PSG, United fans feared the worse. Mount who moved to Manchester United from Chelsea in the summer of 2023 has spent the most of 3 out of his 5 years contract injured. He has managed 72 matches and spent 400 days on the treatment table.
Little wonder why when he was replaced by Tyler Fletcher v PSG, fans immediately began to assume that he was playing out the same old script they were used to.
Thankfully, Carrick has some good news. According to the United Head Coach, Mount’s substitution was not because of anything serious but only because they were looking to prevent something worse and keep him fit.
Carrick told VG “He got kicked. We just wanted to be careful and look after him. We’ve been lucky with injuries so far, so we wanted to be careful.”
Mount Performance in Manchester United Preseason So Far
Aside from Bryan Mbeumo and former Chelsea man Andrey Santos, Mason Mount is arguably United’s standout performer in the preseason.
He has taken a deeper role being paired with Santos and it is looking like this suits him better as he is able to dictate play, cover less grounds, and show his intelligence on the ball.
At United, the Englishman has been deployed in several positions – from the right wing to the number 10 position and this many believe has been the reason he has not had the chance to show his quality at United. It seems Carrick has decided to give him this new role along with Santos and that move has worked pretty well.
It remains to see whether Manchester United get their desired 3rd midfield signing who we all expect to be a DM with names like Kone, Tchoameni, and Baleba on the top list of options to be at the Theater of Dreams.
Will Mount Play the Remaining United Preseason Fixtures?
We wait to see what Carrick’s position on Mount’s fitness will be but from his comments, we can deduce that he would prefer to give Mount a break for their next fixture which would be against former boss, Ruben Amorim.
“I’m looking forward to [having the whole group in Dublin]. It’ll be good. Two more matches to keep developing. The players who have returned showed their quality today,” Carrick told MUTV.
The decision on Mount’s fitness would be decided by Carrick but we expect him to lean towards sidelining Mount with the arrival of more players as Rashford and Mainoo will be looking to join the camp by Monday.
