Sparta Prague’s meeting with Teplice is considerably more complicated than the reputation of the two clubs might suggest.
Sparta are traditionally overwhelming favourites for fixtures of this type at the epet ARENA, but the hosts enter Saturday’s match following two significant defeats, while Teplice are producing some of the most impressive early-season form in the Czech top flight.
Sparta’s last domestic outing was particularly worrying. They travelled to Mladá Boleslav and lost 2-0, conceding both goals before half-time.
Despite enjoying 67% possession and winning the corner count 7-1, Sparta failed to record a single shot on target.
Czech reports described it as their second league defeat in three rounds, leaving them with only three points at that stage.
Things became more difficult four days later in Europe. Sparta travelled to Lyon protecting a 2-1 first-leg advantage in Champions League qualifying but were beaten 3-0, exiting 4-2 on aggregate.
Sparta also played part of the match with 10 men after a first-half dismissal, adding further physical strain ahead of the quick return to domestic football.
Teplice could hardly arrive in more contrasting form. FotMob lists them as unbeaten in eight matches and having scored 13 goals across their latest five.
Their most recent league fixture was extraordinary: Teplice drew 5-5 with Viktoria Plzeň, demonstrating both the attacking confidence currently running through the side and the defensive vulnerability that could eventually become important against Sparta.
Before that 10-goal thriller, Teplice’s sequence included victories over Slovan Liberec, Bohemians 1905, Mladá Boleslav and Dukla Prague.
That is the profile of a team travelling to Prague with legitimate belief rather than simply hoping to survive.
There is, however, one enormous statistic working in Sparta’s favour. They have not lost any of their last 17 meetings against Teplice, winning 12 and drawing five.
Recent encounters include a 1-0 Sparta victory at Teplice in April 2026, a 2-2 draw in Prague last November and another 1-1 draw at Sparta’s ground in November 2024.
Sparta’s squad situation also deserves attention. FotMob lists several unavailable players, including Jakub Martinec, Sivert Mannsverk, Uchenna Aririerisim, Patrik Vydra, Ondrej Penxa and Magnus Kofod Andersen.
Teplice also have a substantial injury list, so neither manager is operating with a completely unrestricted squad.
Tactically, Teplice should not need to dominate possession. The defeat against Mladá Boleslav exposed Sparta’s difficulties converting possession into penetration: they controlled most of the ball but created almost nothing of consequence.
Teplice can therefore stay compact, attack the spaces left when Sparta push forward and try to increase the anxiety inside the stadium if the hosts fail to score early.
The counterargument is that Sparta desperately need a response. Returning home after consecutive defeats should produce a much more aggressive performance, and Teplice’s willingness to play openly has risks. Conceding five against Plzeň is hardly an ideal defensive preparation for a trip to Prague.
This is consequently a match where I would avoid treating Sparta as an automatic banker. Their historical dominance and home advantage still make them my choice, but Teplice’s form makes goals particularly interesting.
