Former Liverpool and Chelsea Women Coach Matt Beard has Passed On

Terrible breaking news as Matt Beard passed on this evening. The cause of his death remains unknown at the time of writing this as we await feedback from his family who were with him.

Matt Beard started his coaching career with the Millwall Lionesses in 2008 before moving to Chelsea Ladies in 2009. After spending three years at Chelsea, Beard joined Liverpool where he also spent three years on Merseyside before traveling to the US to take charge of the Boston Breakers. In 2018, he made his return to England to coach West Ham United Women and was named interim boss for Bristol City.

He made another return to Liverpool in 2021 and was there until February this year. He joined Burnley in June but resigned in August because Leicester were interested in having him take over the team. Burnley prevented him from holding talks with the WSL side which led to his resignation.

A club statement from Liverpool said: “Liverpool Football Club is deeply shocked and saddened by the sudden passing of former LFC Women manager Matt Beard.

“The thoughts of everyone at the club are with Matt’s family and friends at this devastating time.

“Matt was not only an extremely committed and successful manager, he was also a person of real integrity and warmth, who will always be remembered with genuine fondness by everyone he worked with at the club.”

It added: “He parted company with LFC Women in February, following a significant contribution to the club’s development and many memorable moments and achievements during his multiple tenures. Rest in peace, Matt.”

He will be remembered as a key personnel for the growth of the teams he coached during his 17 years as a women’s team coach.
