Onana is on His Way Out of Manchester United and Here’s a Look at What His Two-Year Stay Has Been Like

Onana leaves Manchester United

Several reports suggest that Andre Onana is set to leave Manchester United with club to club agreement done between Manchester United and Trabzonspor from Turkey.

Bulk of Manchester United fans would remember him for being really woeful as a goalkeeper despite joining with promise two seasons ago after finishing Champions League runners up with Inter Milan.

For somebody who was the replacement for De Gea, there were a lot of expectations and it is sad to say that Onana did not live up to that expectation.

The numbers from his first two seasons at Manchester United paint a difficult picture.

  • 2023/24 season: 38 appearances, 58 goals conceded, 9 clean sheets, 149 saves made.
  • 2024/25 season: 34 appearances, 44 goals conceded, 9 clean sheets, 90 saves made.

In total, that’s 72 league games for United with 102 goals conceded and just 18 clean sheets. The save totals (239 in two seasons) show he was busy, but the high concession rate underlines defensive instability and lapses in reliability.

Passing stats were a mixed point. He attempted a lot of short and long passes, completing around 70% overall. That ball-playing quality was part of why United signed him, but errors and inconsistency overshadowed his distribution.

Why He’s Considered a Bad Signing

Onana arrived in 2023 with high expectations after shining at Inter, but he quickly gained a reputation for costly mistakes in both the Premier League and Champions League.

The numbers confirm that he struggled to command his area consistently and was not the secure upgrade United hoped for after David de Gea.

The lack of improvement from his first to second season only reinforced doubts. Clean sheets stagnated at 9 in both years despite a high number of games, and the goals conceded column remained heavy. Supporters and pundits began labeling him a poor fit for United’s long-term rebuild.

Current Situation at Manchester United

At the start of the 2025 season, Onana slipped down the pecking order under new coach Rúben Amorim.

With United signing Senne Lemmens from Royal Antwerp, Onana’s future became even more uncertain. Lemmens is viewed as the long-term solution, while Amorim prefers building from the back with a fresh option.

That left Onana on the verge of being loaned to Trabzonspor, a move that signals how far his stock has fallen in just two years. A loan away would give him a reset, but for United, it effectively marks the end of his role as first-choice goalkeeper.

Overall Assessment

André Onana’s Premier League numbers show flashes of quality but too many costly inconsistencies. 72 matches, 18 clean sheets, and 102 goals conceded is not the return a club like Manchester United demands from their number one.

Once signed as a modern, proactive goalkeeper, he now looks like a misfit in the squad’s future direction.

With Lemmens arriving and Amorim reshaping the squad, Onana leaving on loan feels inevitable — a move that underlines why many already call him one of United’s most disappointing signings in recent years.
